TR19 Compliant Ventilation & Kitchen Extract Cleaning — Scotland-Wide
A TR19 certificate is the document your insurer, EHO, and fire officer require as proof that your commercial kitchen extract system has been cleaned to the BESA standard. Deep Clean Scotland issues TR19 certificates on completion of every compliant clean — across all of Scotland.
A TR19 certificate is a compliance document issued by a qualified kitchen extract cleaning contractor after completing a clean that meets the BESA TR19 Grease standard. It confirms that your kitchen extract system — canopy, filters, ductwork, fan, and discharge point — has been cleaned to the required standard and that grease levels have been reduced to within acceptable limits.
The certificate must be accompanied by pre- and post-clean grease depth measurements and before-and-after photographs. Without these supporting documents, a certificate alone is not sufficient evidence of compliance.
Only certificates issued by BESA Vent Hygiene Register (VHR) members carry full weight with insurers and environmental health officers across Scotland. Deep Clean Scotland has held VHR membership since the register was established.
Insurance Validity
Most commercial kitchen insurers in Scotland now require a valid TR19 certificate as a condition of cover. A fire claim without one can be refused in full.
Fire Safety Legislation
The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 requires the responsible person to manage fire risk. TR19 certification is the recognised evidence that extract fire risk is being controlled.
Food Hygiene Inspections
Scottish local authority EHOs request TR19 records as part of food hygiene inspections. A valid certificate demonstrates that you are managing hygiene and fire risk responsibly.
To issue a valid TR19 certificate, the following must be completed and documented. This is what every Deep Clean Scotland clean covers:
Any operator of a commercial kitchen in Scotland should hold a current TR19 certificate. This includes:
Required for insurance validity and food hygiene inspections.
EHOs and fire officers routinely request TR19 records for large kitchen operations.
Scottish Care Inspectorate and NHS Scotland audits include extract hygiene records.
Local authority and HMIE inspections require evidence of compliant extract maintenance.
FM contracts and client SLAs increasingly specify TR19-accredited contractors.
Insurance policies for high-volume frying operations require quarterly TR19 cleans.
How often you need a new TR19 certificate depends on your cooking type and volume. TR19 defines four risk categories:
Every 3 months
Heavy Use
12+ hours/day, high-fat cooking — large restaurants, fast food, hotels
Every 6 months
Moderate Use
6–12 hours/day — most Scottish restaurants, pubs, care homes
Every 12 months
Light Use
2–6 hours/day — small cafés, office kitchens, community halls
Annually or as required
Seasonal Use
Under 2 hours/day — event venues, seasonal hospitality
